Some interesting figures were recently published in the papers . Research from the Centre for Crime prevention reveals a growing number of serious and repeat offenders prison sentences are being suspended by the courts. Suspended sentences are now being handed out for tens of thousands of significant offences every year. One judge said suspended sentences are being handed out "a bit like confetti".
Peter Cuthbertson author for the report and director of the centre for Crime prevention said: Thugs and sex offenders who think they are going to jail are overjoyed when they find out the prison sentence is suspended. "it make a mockery of justice for victims and puts the public at risk". The figures from the report go on to show that criminals given suspended sentences go on to commit hundreds of thousands of other crimes.
In 2012/13 in the UK , 11,670 criminals had their prison sentences suspended despite more than 10 previous convictions or cautions.
AND wait for it a further 9,053 serious offenders had their prison sentence suspended despite 15 or more serious convictions or cautions.
Freedom of information requests reveals that there were 110,745 cases of criminals sentenced in 2013 despite having one or more previous suspended sentences and 20,000 thousand are career criminals.

So going on these figures perhaps the proposal here [ alternativetoprison.freeforums.net/thread/2/prison-working-alternative-option ] to house just 5000 might be a tad too few and maybe increase the size to hold up to 10k, but like I said they would probably cull each other so that will keep the numbers down to 5k or they flee the country knowing where they are heading and they can continue their criminal activities elsewhere.
